i made this model for a international 3d competition, sponsored by Boxx workstations, (hence the name).
the objective of the competition was to create a mining dorid, that is a self guided robot that has 3 operating modes, mine, flight and attack mode. this model was done in 3d max, and the textures were done in photoshop. i have spent allot of time and though in to this piece, and over all i like it very much , i planned this droid so that it will be a mass production, very crude, massive, like a catapillar, that will have no problem drilling ,and mining in the harshest enviorments, even his head and sensors were planned to take a beating and still function. hope you guys like it Daily DeviationGiven 2005-10-17Drill - 827 mining droid by ~gizmoaseth shows a level of complexity and functionality that one would expect from a real, purchasable droid. thanks for the comments, and yeah, if todays robots can build cars and got for a drive on mars, i think in about 50 years, we might have robots that will be close to what we imagine today. that'll be awsome!
how do you model your works? what i tend to do is trace part sides with the line tool and then bevel or extrude the face then convert it to editable mesh then mold it using the compound object option to subtract or add objects. the problem with this technique is that the mesh seems irregular on the inside and some faces are hard to texture, hence some pixel stretchings that are impossible to correct. I don't know how to use nurbs. also do you know how to add bones on a model and how to animate them?
i dont think that nerbs could help you as much, i use nerbs mostly for organic items since they are so rounded and "fluidic", createing a robot i with nerbs would be strange, but it might work.
adding bones, and using IK, is a little difficult at first, im not a expert on that issue, but i use bones only for orgainc stuff like a hand or a foot, that has a "skin", the bones create the actual movment and they strech the skin, but in this case i rigged the robot witout bones, beacuse the only moving parts are the actual parts of the robot, so i just linked what i tought needed to be linked, and created controlers to make it more easy to move and animate.
you might wanna check out the tutorial section in [link] they have some great tutorials there that can help you in understanding IK, bones, editable mesh , and textureing.
